A Sound Map of Dún Laoghaire

We are delighted to have this contribution from our latest guest recordist, Joseph Young. Joseph is an artist working in spatial audio, performance and installation, based between Brighton (UK), Dublin (IE) & Berlin (DE). A specialist in binaural field recording techniques, Joseph has exhibited and performed at Tate Britain, Tate Modern, Towner Art Gallery, Jerwood Hastings, Pallant House, V&A London, Estorick Collection, De La Warr Pavilion, Houses of Parliament, Errant Bodies Berlin, MPA Berlin, Seoul Museum of Art and on Wall Street, USA.

He has been artist-in-residence at Killruddery House & Gardens, Co. Wicklow as part of a practice-led PhD at SMARTlab, part of the Inclusive Design Research Centre of Ireland, University College Dublin, and funded by the Irish Research Council. He recently completed his PhD which investigated the role of geo-location, binaural phonography and 'hauntings' in summoning the ghosts of an historic written archive through immersive sound art practice.

We are very pleased to welcome our latest guest recordist Barry O’Mahony from Blackrock. Barry has been a fixture on the Irish music scene for many years. Some of you may know him from his rock band Luggage, who released several EP’s during the 1990’s. Barry ran a music shop called Atom records in Bray, County Wicklow for many years. You may also know Barry from some of his other work with Projector Collective & Donal Dineen (Dublin Electronic Arts Festival 2009) and with Irish band The Drays. Barry currently fronts Saturday Captains with Brendan Tallon and their very fine debut CD is available from Bandcamp and record shops.

Ian Nyquist is an artist based in Dublin, Ireland. His work revolves around audio and its application. Primarily through the process of field recording, he examines the compositional value of otherwise spontaneous and innate subjects. Fergus Kelly is a mixed media artist based in Dublin, Ireland. His work mainly involves sound, but also includes photomontage, and more recently, painting. He has been in numerous shows around Ireland, and has shown in Canada, America, Germany, Finland, Holland and England. We are delighted to welcome our third guest recordist Bryan Robson.

Bryan made this series of recordings around Dún Laoghaire during summer 2015.

Bryan Robson is a composer, improviser and sound designer from Co Kildare, Ireland. He holds an BA in Computer Music as well as an MA in creative music technologies from NUI Maynooth.

Bryan's music was most recently heard at the 16th international conference on digital audio effects (DAFx) in Maynooth and and has also been showcased at the 2nd International Csound conference in the Berklee College of Music, Boston.

We are pleased to welcome our second guest recordist Karen Power.

Karen made this night time recording near the waters edge at Dillon Park, Dalkey during March 2015.

Karen Power is a versatile, enthusiastic and well-received Irish composer, improviser, educator and curator who is currently Artist-in-residence in the DAAD Artists-in-Berlin Program. Her current CD ‘is it raining while you listen’ is available from farpoint recordings.

Our first guest recordist is Guillaume Beauron.

Guillaume visited Dún Laoghaire during March 2015 and made a series of recordings around Convent Lane, Georges Street and Sandycove as well as further afield in Ballcorus. This is the first of two installments of his recordings.

Guillaume Beauron is a sound recordist, music composer and sound designer who works in Ireland, France and abroad. Some of his recent projects include ‘High Rise’, ‘The Canal’, ‘The Turning Tide in the Life of Men’ and ‘Silence’.
